Carrie Fisher

At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning at all, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of”

– Carrie Fisher

As pointed out last year in the Huffington Post, Carrie Fisher was a total badass!

She is one of my all-time heroes, because of her approach to a mental illness I also have and her portrayal of one of my favourite movie characters.

Being bipolar does impact every day of my life, I take medication that reminds me constantly I have it.  I check on how I’m reacting and behaving constantly and sometimes I worry I’m ‘too happy’ – who else has to do that?

But I am surviving, I have survived my own mind many times and that is something to be proud of.  I do live and functionwell, I have to face a lot of challenges down to my illness and I don’t always make it easy for myself but I am living with it.

Do I wish I didn’t have it?  Of course I do!  I wouldn’t wish this illness on anyone but I can’t change what my brain is like, I can just treat it well, look after myself and make the best of it.

So thank you Carrie for being a total inspiration.  I wish you knew the impact you had on so many people around the world.
